The cost for tokyo-osaka (one-way, about 3h) with shinkansen is 1450yen... so the railway pass is cheaper compared to that, cause you can also use it in tokyo, but then again... Going by bus is definetly the cheapest option, but it tales about 8,5h, but since it's a night bus it's not that bad.
